Description:

Watercolor on paper of two women who appear to be arguing over a parcel. The woman on the left stands upright and holds the parcel in both hands. She wears a solid blue skirt, shaded with green, a white blouse and a straw hat and seems to smile as the other woman points at her angrily. The woman on the right wears a white head wrap, pink shirt, and green skirt shaded in blue and has positioned her right hand on her hip in anger. The figures stand in front of an arch on a cobblestone or brick street (probably in downtown Charleston on Market Street). Other figures are faintly visible through the arch. Ball has shaded the skin of the figures by using a solid, dark hue with thick black outlines that cause the image to resemble an illustration rather than a portrait. The image's well planned composition balances the green of the skirt with the green of the parcel.
