Podilymbus podiceps, Grebe egg

Description:

One of six pied-billed grebe (Podilymbus podiceps podiceps, Linnaeus 1758) eggs collected from Magnolia Gardens in Charleston County, South Carolina (see CBE1791-CBE1796). Ernest Cutts noted incubation had begun by time of collection and the nest was composed of "...decaying reed stems and cattail flags and floating on top of water and attached to spike grass in duck pond on the Ashley River. Water 23 inches deep at nest."
