Podilymbus podiceps, Grebe egg

Description:

One of five pied-billed grebe (Podilymbus podiceps podiceps, Linnaeus 1758) eggs collected from Magnolia Gardens in Charleston County, South Carolina (see CBE1797-CBE1801). Collector Ernest Cutts noted the eggs had been far along in their incubation at time of collection and the nest was composed of "a little floating island of decaying vegetation attached to a few stems of spike grass in large duck pond on Ashley River. Nest is on open water about 30 in. deep at nest."
