Description:

Oval photograph of a group of young men and women sitting on the steps of a hotel or boarding house on Isle of Palms. Paine noted on reverse, "Isle of Palms Party Aug. 1903." A second notation written in different handwriting identifies the place and subjects as, "Girls Quarters called 'Kimono Kottage' - Boys' known as 'Pyjama Palace.' Top Row - Glover Alston, W. Lucas Simons, Billy (Wm. Atmar) Smith, Toomer Porter, next two unknown, Christine Hanckel (Mrs. Harry Shackelford, H.B. Sparkman, Helen McIver (Mrs. W.H. Wammanamaker, Cheraw), M.A. Sparkman, Rena Smith (Mrs. Buist Davidson), Miriam Todd (Mrs. Roderick McIver), unknown, Katie Waring (Mrs. G.H. Whipple of Rochester)."
