Description:

Black and white photograph of the west (rear) elevation of the Heyward-Washington House located at 87 Church Street.

Built in 1772 by Daniel Heyward, this Georgian-style double house was the town house of his son, Thomas Heyward, Jr. and his wife, Elizabeth. The house was purchased in 1929 by The Charleston Museum and restored with the aid of the Preservation Society of Charleston, then known as the Society for the Preservation of Old Dwellings. It opened the following year as Charleston's first historic house museum. Because the city rented the house from Heyward for President George Washington's visit in 1791, it has been traditionally called the Heyward-Washington House.

Photographer Charles N. Bayless, funded by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, photographed and recorded the Carolina Lowcountry between 1970 and 1988. The South Carolina Project took place between 1977 and 1979.
