Description:

Black and white photograph of the general view of the kitchen building at the Heyward-Washington House located at 87 Church Street.

Originally built by John Milner, Jr. in 1749, the brick kitchen house included a second and third floor outfitted with five rooms for slaves to live. It continued to be used as a kitchen until the early twentieth century. In 1929, The Charleston Museum purchased the main house and lot with all outbuildings and began restoration with the aid of the Preservation Society of Charleston, then known as the Society for the Preservation of Old Dwellings. The main house opened to visitors in 1930 as Charleston's first house museum.

Photographer Charles N. Bayless, funded by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, photographed and recorded the Carolina Lowcountry between 1970 and 1988. The South Carolina Project took place between 1977 and 1979.
