Description:

Black and white photograph showing a large shield on the bow of the landing ship LSM 298. It lists various counties in North Carolina that purchased war bonds to pay for the ship's construction.
On the reverse is typed " North Carolinians' Bond Purchases Paid for This Landing Ship. Charleston, S.C. Nov. 13 -- When the landing ship LSM 298 slid down Charleston Navy Yard's building ways early this morning in dual launching ceremonies, she bore a large shield on her bow proclaiming that construction of the vessel was made possible by the War Bond purchases of the citizens of six North Carolina counties -- Macon, Mecklenburg, Mitchell, Montgomery, New Hanover, and Pamlico. The ship is one of the 10 of these 'Pacific Puddle Jumpers' being built by the Charleston Navy Yard with funds oversubscribed by 57 North Carolina counties during the Fifth War Loan Drive. The sister ship launched today, the LSM 299, honored citizens of Pasquotank, Pender, Perquimans, Person and Polk counties."
