Description:

Photograph of the gate to the Charleston Arsenal that Paine shot from one side of a stereoview. Four uniformed men stand just inside the gate and four children stand in the foreground, all pose for the photographer. Note the tricycle. Paine recorded the image information and his camera settings on reverse, "A rare picture, Porter's Military Academy before the Civil War as a U.S. Arsenal. Note the old Confederate Type Uniforms, also a wooden Tricycle. A20 E.1." He also etched "No. 21" on the top, left corner.

Please see MK 8136a for the stereoview he copied that was likely taken as part of the photographic survey done in 1865 but could have been taken at any time until 1879.
