Black and white photograph of the Calhoun Monument in Marion Square with the old Citadel in the background. Sams set his camera up on Calhoun Street to get as much of the Citadel in the shot as possible.

The monument is 115 feet tall and was erected June 27, 1896. John C. Calhoun stands with his cloak over his shoulders and a scroll in his left hand as he looks out over Calhoun Street.
