Description:

Photograph showing the damage from the earthquake that occurred on August 31, 1886 to the residence located at 68 Beaufain Street. The caption on reverse reads, "Taken after the 31st of August, 1886" and incorrectly gives it as the residence of "Greer" the address is actually 68 Beaufain. Handwritten at the bottom reads, "Charleston Earthquake scene - Residence of J. Forrest Greer, Beaufain St.'". The 1886 Charleston City Directory has J. Forrest Greer listed as residing at 192 Wentworth Street and the 1887 Charleston City Directory has him boarding at 56 Beaufain Street.

George LaGrange Cook was a well-known photographer in Charleston who photographed the destruction of the 1886 earthquake soon after it happened, producing a series of images titled "Cook's Earthquake Views of Charleston and Vicinity" that could be purchased as souvenirs.
