H. L. Hunley Counted Cross Stitch Kit

The H.L. Hunley was the most famous of a number of Confederate submarines. With a displacement of 7.5 tons, it is credited as being the first submarine to sink an enemy warship. On the night of February 17, 1864, the Hunley, with eight-man crew and captain, attacked the USS Housatonic, a Union blockade ship stationed just off the coast of Charleston, SC. After an explosive charge delivered by the Hunley detonated, the Housatonic sank in three minutes. After the Hunley flashed a success signal with a lam, it, too, sank beneath the waves, with all hands lost. The mystery of the Hunley’s sinking may be solved soon. After 136 years at the bottom, the Hunley was carefully raised to the surface in August of 2000. Researchers hope to learn more about the circumstances that caused the sinking, right on the heels of a successful mission.
