Teen Gullah Rag Rug Camp

Teen Gullah Rag Rug Camp

Join Quilter Artist and Keeper of the Culture, Cookie Washington for a Gullah Rag Rug Summer Camp geared for teens. Washington will provide an interactive demonstration of Rag Rug technique honoring Gullah artist Sharon Cooper-Murray “The Gullah Lady.” Passed down generation by generation, this technique traditionally combined feed and grain sacks with rag strips to make unique quilts.

This 3-day camp will take place from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm each day and teens will learn to utilize special tools to create a rag quilt. Campers will each receive their own 9×9 inch square of burlap and sub-cut African print fabrics and neutral color muslin or broadcloth scraps.

Teens are strongly encouraged to bring additional bits of clothing or scrap fabric. All necessary tools will be provided for the workshop.

This camp is for teens between the ages of 12 and 18. Registration is required.

Classes with insufficient enrollment may be canceled. Students will be notified in advance and full refunds or the opportunity to transfer to another workshop will be offered. Student cancellations must be requested 48 hours in advance for a refund minus $10 administration fee. Full registration fee may be transferred to a future workshop or other adult program. Cancellations made less than 48 hours in advance will result in a forfeiture of the workshop fee.
