Natural History Gallery Grand Opening

Natural History Gallery Grand Opening

Come celebrate the opening of The Charleston Museum’s Bunting Natural History Gallery with a special event! Get your picture taken in a set of Megalodon jaws, stand next to a Giant Ground Sloth, and compare your wingspan with that of the largest flying bird that ever lived, Pelagornis sandersi. Be one of the first to see this new exhibit hall, with spectacular displays, fascinating fossils, animal mounts and geologic materials from the Museum’s extensive natural history collections, and unique interactive experiences. Special presentations, crafts, a face painter, a scavenger hunt and more will create a day full of learning and fun.

Furthermore, Museum curators will be on hand to introduce you to this outstanding addition to the Museum’s exhibits! Natural History Curator Matthew Gibson will be stationed in the gallery’s whale section to talk with visitors about our amazing Oligocene whale collection. Curatorial Assistant Jessie Peragine will be at our new Open Lab discussing our ongoing natural history research and specimen preparation. Additionally, one of the Museum’s local natural history volunteers, Boone Jones, will be by the C. megalodon jaws discussing his ongoing research on shark teeth at the Museum. Archivist and Collections Manager Jennifer McCormick will also open the Museum’s Archives to exhibit the artwork, which served as inspiration for some of the gallery’s design work, of John James Audubon and Maria Martin Bachman.

This event is great for people of all ages and will also act as September’s Family Fun event.

FREE for Museum members and FREE with admission.
