Members-only Behind the Seams Tour: The Art of Abstraction

Members-only Behind the Seams Tour: The Art of Abstraction

Quilting has always been a means of creative expression, uniting color and pattern to form an object of purpose. Just as paint on canvas functions, the fabric pieces often work as artistic parameters, testing the visual acuity and imagination of the individual. The Charleston Museum is pleased to announce a collaborative exhibition with the Gibbes Museum of Art in which abstract artwork will be displayed alongside the Museum’s quilts to showcase the artistic beauty of both mediums.

On January 17th, Museum Members are invited to an exclusive preview of The Art of Abstraction: Modernism in Quilting before it opens to the public.  Curator of Historic Textiles Virginia Theerman will be on hand to answer questions and provide a guided tour of this never before seen exhibit.  After the tour, Theerman will then demonstrate how curators pack and store quilts to preserve them for years to come. This program is FREE and exclusively for current Museum Members.  Not a Museum Member, yet?  Join today!
