Invisible Ink: Printing with Mordants and Natural Dyeing with Local Artist Kristy Bishop

Invisible Ink: Printing with Mordants and Natural Dyeing with Local Artist Kristy Bishop

June 8: 9:30 am – 12:30 pm and June 9: 9:30 – 11:30 am.

In this two day workshop, fiber artist Kristy Bishop will teach participants how to print on plant based fabrics with mordant paste using screen printing, block printing and hand painting techniques. She will also include some clay resist and indigo to be combined with the other natural dyes.  The mordant paste needs at least a day to cure in order to use it with the various dyes.

On the second day, participants will learn how to fix the mordants and will dye their printed fabrics and items.  This will truly feel like an invisible ink coming to life. The color will slowly show itself only where printed.  The longer in the dyes, the darker and more vibrant the color.  Combined with indigo and clay resist, the entire color spectrum is possible.  Dyes used will be indigo, osage orange, madder root, cochineal, and seasonal plants.  Each participant will receive one tea towel to print, plenty of sample cotton, and is encouraged to bring personal items such as clothing, pillow cases, and other fiber goods.

Registration is required. Classes with insufficient enrollment may be canceled. Students will be notified in advance and full refunds or the opportunity to transfer to another workshop will be offered. Student cancellations must be requested 48 hours in advance for a refund minus $10 administration fee.  Full registration fee may be transferred to a future workshop or other adult program.  Cancellations made less than 48 hours in advance will result in a forfeiture of workshop fee.
