This spring at the Heyward-Washington House, archaeologists and researchers from The Charleston Museum and The College of Charleston will conduct an archaeological field school to expand on previous excavations at one of the earliest sites of colonial downtown Charlestown.

In this exclusive, hands-on excavation tour, visitors will have the opportunity to take a specialized guided tour of the excavation site with Museum Curator of Archaeology, John Fisher, and College of Charleston Assistant Professor of Anthropology, Dr. Sarah Platt.  With exclusive access to these experts, visitors will have the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about what goes into an archaeological excavation and field school.

Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to sift through artifacts found at the Heyward-Washington House’s dig site.  Search for early colonial Charlestown in new undocumented areas at one of the oldest sites in downtown Charleston,

Space is limited. Reservations required. Registration fee also includes admission to tour the interior of the Heyward-Washington House.  Please note the last tour of the day begins at 4:15 pm.

Cancellations must be requested 48 hours in advance for a refund minus $10 administration fee.  Full registration fee may be transferred to other adult programs.  Cancellations made less than 48 hours in advance will result in a forfeiture of tour fee.

More information on excavations at the Heyward-Washington House:

Excavations began at 87 Church Street in the late 1970s by The Charleston Museum archaeologist, Dr. Elaine Herold. Dr. Herold was able to locate the remnants of structures, a forge, and much more of the early 18th century city gunsmith John Milner Sr. Milner’s home and workshop. His work had been crucial to the defense and trade of early Charleston. Decades later excavations were continued in and around the stable by The Charleston Museum’s Curator of Historical Archaeology, Martha Zierden. These excavations provided an unbelievable wealth of material and information which continues to be the topic of dissertations and research to this day.
