Conversations with a Curator: Historic Textiles Curator Jan Hiester on Quilts Inspired by Nature

Conversations with a Curator: Historic Textiles Curator Jan Hiester on Quilts Inspired by Nature

Botanical motifs have long been popular for quilted bed coverings and our exhibit, Piece by Piece, Quilts Inspired by Nature, will explore these, from early 19th century whitework baskets and trees to elaborately printed chintz appliqués to 20th century nature-inspired patterns. Textiles Curator Jan Hiester will discuss  the origins of chintz and the broad appeal it had in the Lowcountry. This tour will dig a little deeper into these beautiful designs, how the quilts were sewn and more about the women that made them.

Conversations with a Curator allows visitors a chance to have an intimate look at an exhibit in The Charleston Museum, hear stories, ask questions and spark conversations. The Museum’s collections are both extraordinary and diverse and each Curator-led talk and tour will allow participants to immerse themselves in different areas of Charleston’s history.

All Conversations with a Curator programs are open to the public and FREE for Members and free with admission.

Conversations with a Curator programs are typically held on the second Friday of each month, with a few exemptions.
