Calligraphy Workshops

Calligraphy Workshops

On Saturday, July 15 , join The Charleston Museum and instructor Leaha Gathings for Calligraphy for Beginners from 10 am – 12 pm and Intermediate Calligraphy from 1 pm – 3 pm. Sign up for one class or for both!

The Calligraphy for Beginners Workshop will provide an introduction to pointed pen calligraphy. This class is perfect for anyone interested in pursuing the art of calligraphy! During these two hours, participants will become familiar with the basics of pointed pen calligraphy techniques. Have something of your own that you’d like to work on? Near the end of class, there will be time for students to practice on items from home– bring envelopes, a journal, etc!

No previous experience or artistic ability required. A starter kit will be provided to all participants to use during class and to take home afterward. The kit includes an alphabet for practice, an oblique pen holder, 2 nibs, a jar of ink, tracing paper, gridline practice paper, and detailed instructions on how to use all supplies.

At 1 pm, join us for an Intermediate Calligraphy Workshop, where students will further refine their skills and expand their knowledge in calligraphy. This intermediate class will focus on capital letters, connecting letters, exploring different styles of calligraphy, mixing your own colors with gouache ink, and also provide an introduction to flourishing. Participation in the Beginner class or prior experience with the oblique pen holder is recommended before enrolling in this class. An intermediate calligraphy kit will be provided during this class. It will include white ink, additional nibs (2), and an intermediate instruction manual.

If you are left handed, please notify us in advance, as a different pen will need to provided. Please email [email protected].
