The Charleston Museum’s upcoming textiles exhibit, Unveiled: Wedding Fashion and Traditions in the South, on display from January 22 – July 10, 2016, will allow visitors to see how wedding dress styles have changed throughout time and will examine trends and traditions. From orange blossom adornments and blue garters to the magnificent white gown, the Museum will exhibit an array of garments from the early 1800s through the mid- 20th century. On display will be everything from gowns, veils, garters, shoes, and jewelry to men’s fashions such as frock coats, tuxedoes, and hats.

The style of each period is evident; garments from the 1810s look very different from those of the 1860s, 1890s or 1920s. Taken from the Museum’s collection, most of the items will relate directly to the South Carolina Lowcountry while reflecting wedding customs across time.

To celebrate the launch of this exhibit, The Charleston Museum will host an opening, a Bridesmaids’ Ball, on Thursday, January  21, 2015 from 6:30 – 8:30 pm.  Please join us for this wedding-themed reception!  Enjoy everyone’s favorite post-nuptial jams from DJ Professor Ping, delicious food provided by B Gourmet Catering, Cathead Vodka and JAM Drinking Vinegar cocktails, Wine Awesomeness’ awesome wine, and Palmetto Brewery beer, while taking a look at our new exhibit and learning from our curators themselves. Frampton’s Flowers will be contributing beautiful arrangements to the décor of the evening. Themed attire is strongly encouraged. Ladies are invited to wear their old bridesmaids dresses (thought it would just sit in your closet forever didn’t you?) or a family member’s and men are welcome to come in their best suit, something vintage, or something ridiculous that you secretly wish you could wear to a ceremony – anything goes as long as it’s wedding themed! Tickets are all inclusive and may be purchased online or over the phone at 843.722.2996 ext. 235. $30 for Members, $40 for Non-Members for advance tickets purchased before January 10 and $40 for Members, $50 for Non-members for tickets sold after January 9.
