Battery Tynes Tour
In August of 1863 Battery Tynes was constructed by enslaved people and soldiers stationed on James Island. Explore this fortification with Chief of Collections Jennifer McCormick at The Charleston Museum’s Dill Sanctuary. Surrounded by a moat and consisting of a 10 – 20 foot high parapet with a magazine and bombproof, this fort was placed upstream on the Stono River to supplement Fort Pemberton.
Please note: this is an “off-road” location with steep inclines and unprepared terrain. Walking shoes/boots are recommended.
