AVAILABLE TRAVELING EXHIBITS:
Redcoats: The British Soldier in South Carolina during the American Revolution
Over 10,000 British, Hessian and Loyalist regulars fought in South Carolina during the American Revolutionary War. Their experience in the rebellious colony, like that of their patriot opponents, was often difficult. Provisions were scarce, duty was hard, pay was low, and actions with the enemy were deadly. Yet, these soldiers, English, German, and American, endured. Many were killed in action or died of disease; others returned home unscathed; many others remained behind to start a new life in an independent United States of America. Redcoats: The British Soldier in South Carolina during the American Revolution tells their story.
Originally produced as part of the Charleston Museum's special exhibition Redcoats, Hessians and Tories: The British Siege and Occupation of Charleston, this traveling exhibit will be available to museums and historic sites beginning July 1, 2004. Curated by Carl Borick, assistant director of the Charleston Museum and author of A Gallant Defense: The Siege of Charleston, 1780, the exhibit uses professionally-based research and period images to take an in-depth look at the British soldier in Revolutionary America.
