Spicebush Swallowtail Coaster

Availability: In stock

Maria Martin (1796-1863) was the sister-in-law, and later wife, of Reverend John Bachman. She began her artistic career creating botanical paintings for John James Audubon’s Birds of America. He would eventually entrust her with the task of painting butterflies and insects for his folios. This coaster features butterfly renderings that were taken directly from two of Maria Martin’s practice sketchbooks. These special practice books were donated by the descendants of the Bachman/Audubon family and are now located in The Charleston Museum’s Archives. These intricate Spicebush Swallowtails can be found in the Lowcountry today and make great gifts for nature lovers! Purchase one or take home a set of four, each depicting a different butterfly that Maria Martin studied and so beautifully rendered.
