Maria Martin Coaster Set

Availability: In stock

Take home your own set of Maria Martin Butterfly Coasters! The remarkable images depicted here, shared from our archives, add beautiful color, natural beauty, and artistic flare to any setting while celebrating a historic Charleston female artist. Maria Martin (1796-1863) was the sister-in-law, and later wife, of Reverend John Bachman. She began her artistic career creating botanical paintings for John James Audubon’s Birds of America. He would eventually entrust her with the task of painting butterflies and insects for his folios. These coasters feature butterfly renderings that were taken directly from two of Maria Martin’s practice sketchbooks. These special practice books were donated by the descendants of the Bachman/Audubon family and are now located in The Charleston Museum’s Archives. Found in this set are Monarchs, Pipevine Swallowtails, Faithful Beauties, and Spicebush Swallowtails, each species different and wonderfully detailed!
