Availability: In stock

Maria Martin (1796-1863) was the sister-in-law, and later wife, of Reverend John Bachman. She began her artistic career creating botanical paintings for John James Audubon’s Birds of America. He would eventually entrust her with the task of painting butterflies and insects for his folios. This coaster features a monarch butterfly renderings that were taken directly from one of Maria Martin’s practice sketchbooks. Her special practice books were donated by the descendants of the Bachman/Audubon family and are now located in The Charleston Museum’s Archives. These majestic Monarch Butterflies add a touch of color to any setting and make great gifts! Purchase one or take home a set of four, each depicting a different butterfly that Maria Martin studied and so beautifully rendered.
