Details

The American Civil War began in Charleston, South Carolina, on April 12, 1861. In the four years of conflict which followed, Federal land and naval forces made five major attempts to capture the Holy City.

Although none reduced Charleston to surrender, these attacks strained defending Confederate forces and made privation, dislocations, anxieties and agonies a part of everyday life for the city’s inhabitants. Men from Charleston left regularly for military service, locally and to distant parts, many becoming part of the flow of wounded and those fallen in battle.

Over time, objects from the war period in Charleston—including uniforms, weapons, flags, medical kits, prosthetics, and personal possessions—have become part of this institution’s wonderful collections. Many are located in the Museum’s current exhibitions.
