Black and white photograph of the general view south (front) elevation of the Charleston Insurance and Trust Building located at 12 Broad Street.

Built c. 1783 by James Wright, a wealthy merchant, it was designed from two storefront patterns by New England Architect, Asher Benjamin, published in a pattern book. The Quincy granite facade was added in 1839 by the Charleston Insurance and Trust Company.

Photographer Charles N. Bayless, funded by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, photographed and recorded the Carolina Lowcountry between 1970 and 1988. The South Carolina Project took place between 1977 and 1979.
