Natural Dyes Summer Camp

July 27 – 31

9 am – 12 pm each day

Explore the world of natural dyes with local artist Kristy Bishop. Campers will learn about indigo and its connection to Charleston history. They will dye cotton fabric and yarn in a fructose (sugar) indigo vat and learn how to create multiple surface patterns using a Japanese technique called Shibori. This involves different folding, binding, and clamping techniques to achieve an infinite number of designs. In addition to indigo, students will learn about different plants that can be used to make natural dye. They will dye yarn as a group using plants such as eucalyptus, onion skins, fennel, acorns, coreopsis, Black-eyed Susans, and more. Once everyone has dyed enough yarn, they will learn how to weave using a lap loom. Just like indigo and natural dyes, weaving has a rich and long history. This camp will show students new connections with plants that they see every day. Included in the class fee is a $25 rental for the loom. Loom kits are for sale and the rental fee will go towards final purchase.
$170/Museum members, $200/Nonmembers.
